What If the Biggest Thing Holding You Back Isn’t Your Age?
Have you ever stopped and wondered if the biggest obstacle in your life isn’t your circumstances… but the story you’ve been telling yourself? Two unexpected moments revealed how powerfully our mindset shapes our reality.
I recently had the opportunity to interview a mindset expert trained in David Bayer’s Mind Hack methodology, and our conversation challenged me in the best possible way. It also made me reflect on two experiences I had over the weekend.
The Airplane That Changed My Perspective
I’ll admit it—I am terrified of flying. I’ve come a long way. I can get on a plane now, especially if it means seeing my daughters, but takeoff still fills me with anxiety. On our recent flight to Kentucky, I found myself gripping my husband’s hand with tears streaming down my face. Then I looked across the aisle. Three young kids were laughing, smiling, and having the time of their lives. We were on the exact same airplane. The same takeoff. The same weather. The same pilot. The only difference was what our minds believed.
I’ve never had a bad experience flying. In fact, statistics say I’m safer on that plane than I am driving to the airport. Yet my brain had created a completely different reality than those children were experiencing. That hit me hard.
Then I Saw a Lion
Driving home from Kentucky, I noticed a billboard for Lion’s Den. The first time I glanced at it, I honestly thought the logo looked like a shrimp. Hours later, after I’d relaxed and my mindset had shifted, I passed the same billboard again. This time all I could see was a lion. The billboard hadn’t changed. My brain had.
It reminded me how powerful our mindset really is. We don’t just interpret the world—we actively shape how we experience it.
What Stories Are You Believing?
As women over 40, we’ve been handed a lot of stories. "You’ll never lose the weight." "It’s all downhill after menopause." "You’ll never have the energy you used to." "You just have to accept feeling this way." But what if those aren’t facts? What if they’re simply beliefs we’ve repeated so often that they feel true?
Your Brain Listens to You
Our brains are constantly paying attention to what we focus on. If we repeatedly tell ourselves: I’m too old. I’ll never change. Nothing works for me — our brains begin looking for evidence that those statements are true.
But what happens if we decide something different? What if we start saying: My body is capable of healing. I am getting stronger every year. I deserve to feel confident. It’s never too late to become healthier. Little by little, our focus shifts—and so do our actions.
Healthy. Alive. Fearless.
That’s what HAF is really about. Yes, we talk about nutrition, movement, GLP-1 medications, IV hydration, hormones, and building muscle. But none of those things matter if the conversation happening between your ears is constantly telling you that you’re failing.
Real transformation starts long before you see it in the mirror. It starts with one new decision. Maybe today your decision is simply this: I no longer believe that my best years are behind me. And that one decision just might change everything.
